Drake Wins $1m World Cup Bet After Canada Knock Out South Africa
Canadian rap superstar Drake has won more than $1 million after successfully backing his home country, Canada, to defeat South Africa in the Round of 32 at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Toronto-born musician had placed a $770,000 wager on Canada through betting platform Stake before the highly anticipated clash. The bet carried a total payout of approximately $1,001,000, earning Drake a profit of about $231,000 after Canada secured a dramatic 1-0 victory.
Before the match, Drake shared a screenshot of the bet on social media, revealing that friendly banter with South African Grammy-winning DJ Black Coffee inspired him to increase the amount he staked. He joked that Black Coffee had been “chirping” in his direct messages, prompting him to “raise the stakes.”
Canada’s victory was sealed by a stoppage-time goal, sending the co-host nation into the Round of 16 for the first time in its FIFA World Cup history. While the result sparked celebrations across Canada, it brought an end to South Africa’s remarkable tournament run after Bafana Bafana reached the knockout stage for the first time ever.
