Naira Gains Strength, Trades at N1,370/$ in Official FX Market
Nigeria’s currency, the naira, has continued its positive performance at the official foreign exchange market, trading at N1,370 against the United States dollar. The latest development signals growing confidence in the country’s foreign exchange reforms and offers fresh hope for businesses and consumers.
The appreciation of the naira comes amid sustained efforts by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Federal Government to stabilize the foreign exchange market through policy reforms, improved transparency, and increased dollar liquidity. Financial analysts say stronger inflows from crude oil exports, diaspora remittances, and foreign investments have played a key role in supporting the local currency.
For many import-dependent businesses, the stronger naira is expected to reduce the cost of accessing foreign exchange, making it easier to import raw materials, machinery, medical supplies, and other essential goods. If the trend is sustained, consumers may also begin to experience lower prices on imported products in the coming months.
Economic experts, however, have urged caution, noting that exchange rate stability must be backed by sound fiscal and monetary policies. They believe Nigeria must continue to boost local production, expand non-oil exports, and attract long-term foreign investment to ensure the gains are not temporary.
The naira has experienced significant fluctuations over the past few years due to high demand for foreign exchange, declining dollar supply, and global economic uncertainties. Recent reforms in the FX market, including efforts to unify exchange rates and improve market efficiency, appear to be gradually restoring investor confidence.
Industry stakeholders have welcomed the latest exchange rate, describing it as a positive signal for the economy. They expressed optimism that a stronger naira could help moderate inflation, lower production costs, and improve the purchasing power of ordinary Nigerians if supported by consistent economic policies.
While challenges remain, economists insist that sustained reforms, improved security, increased exports, and greater industrial productivity will be crucial to maintaining the naira’s momentum.
As the local currency trades at N1,370 per dollar in the official market, Nigerians will be watching closely to see whether the improvement translates into lower prices, increased business confidence, and stronger economic growth in the months ahead.
