WhatsApp is preparing to introduce usernames, a feature that will allow users to connect without sharing their phone numbers. Instead of giving out a personal number, users will be able to share a unique username, making it easier and more private to start conversations.
The feature is expected to improve user privacy, especially when chatting with new contacts, joining groups, or interacting with businesses. Phone numbers may no longer need to be visible to everyone, reducing the risk of spam and unwanted contact.
Although the feature has been spotted in testing, it has not yet been rolled out to all users. Once officially launched, users will likely be able to choose and manage their usernames within the WhatsApp settings.
The addition of usernames brings WhatsApp closer to messaging platforms such as Telegram and Signal, which already offer similar privacy-focused options.
